The constitution defines treason as:
“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.
The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attained.”
This is the only definition that really applies to congress. Anything else is just wishful thinking. Now the one part that could apply is the “giving them aid or comfort” If we consider that China is not our friend and they hold tons of our markers. Wouldn’t intentionally doing something to raise the interest we have to pay them, be giving them aid? I think it would. If China makes a move to crush the US economy, in order to remove the dollar as the accepted unit of trade, we could certainly start considering them an enemy. It isn’t exactly far out conspiracy theory thinking to believe China has every intention of crushing the US economy, in order to make the yen the unit of trade in international trading. Many economists believe that is their intention. SO if members of congress are actively helping them, by lowering the US credit rating, suddenly treason seems like the acceptable definition.
However I don’t think we could convince a majority of the current supreme court that it is. Of course if you follow the supreme court you know this court doesn’t always do what most normal people would consider the right thing. See Stevens V The USA or Citizens United v The FEC. Both of those cases defied all logic. There seems to be some evidence that bribes were paid for one of them and Stevens may have just been to set up the stage for Citizens United. I wouldn’t over rule Virginia Thomas suddenly getting a job with a Chinese lobbying firm.
To sum it up. I think if the courts were open to the idea, the acts of members of congress could be labeled treason. Just keep in mind congress does have a fair amount of protection from being arrested however treason is one of the exceptions. The constitution states
“They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.”
Arresting a member of congress is a very rare thing and they are rightfully protected from exactly what a lot of people want to do right now. It should also be noted the exceptions to this protection are for pretty much what they did. They didn’t sell arms to an enemy or house them inside the USA. However the worked to undermine the United States. They actively tried to ruin our economy. This is a very serious offense. One that seems to be getting little (to no) mention in the corporate media. When I look at it I can’t help but come to the conclusion that they did commit treason and they are in fact traitors against my country. I also think they are going to get away with it. After all they are Republicans and the Democrats are far too gutless to go after them.
